Using social media buzz to gauge popular TV shows/Networks

TV ratings used to be measured solely by Neilsen numbers, which would determine advertising rates. Now, in the age of social media, it is important to consider the role of Facebook, Twitter and the like to promote TV shows. In 2012, NBC was the most socially engaging network, no doubt thanks in large part to the summer Olympics. Sports and reality shows seem to be promoted the most via social media. Marketing via social media is unique since businesses can depend on fans to do much of the advertising for them. Word-of-mouth via the water cooler in the old days has evolved into posting on Facebook or Twitter, posting a picture on Pinterest or writing a blog about a favorite TV show.
